The signatures are historic, but so is the program! Nice claims this event as the world's first ever jazz festival! Program signed: "D Reinhardt", "Louis Armstrong", "S Grappelli/xxx", "Jack Teagarden", "Barney Bigard", "Arvell Shaw", "Earl/Fatha/Hines" (twice!), "Rex Stewart", "Jimmy Archey", "Henry Goodwin", "Milton Mezz Mezzrow", "Big Sid Catlett", "Hugues Panassie", "Baby Dodds/2-25-48", "Good luck/George Kennedy", "Sandy Price", "Sandy Williams", "Lucky Thompson", and 3 unidentified signatures. 8 pages 9½x12. Accompanied by a 6¼x10 unsigned program, 5 pages. Program of the International Jazz Festival, Nice (France), February 22-28, 1948. In all 20 signatures! From February 22 to 28, 1948, the world's first ever jazz festival was held in Nice, France. Organized by HUGUES PANASSIE, President of Hot Club de France, the festival demonstrated Europe's recovery from World War II and helped popularize the new bop style of jazz in France. Especially renowned signers here include Belgian-born gypsy Jean Baptise "DJANGO" REINHARDT (1910-1953). Originally a violinist, he is best remembered for his jazz and swing performances on the acoustic guitar (His missing fingers induced him to develop a unique fingering style). In the 1930s, he performed with STEPHANE GRAPPELLI in the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Although he couldn't read music, Reinhardt created many influential jazz compositions. His style influenced musicians in many genres, from jazz to rock to country music. Reinhardt is rare in any form. French jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli (1908-1997), founder of that historic all-string jazz ensemble at the Hot Club, resumed his internationally famous career... BUDDY (CHARLES) HOLLY - GREETING CARD SIGNED




BUDDY HOLLY. Greeting Card signed: "Buddy", 4x4 when closed. Printed on front: "For You,/DAD/on Father's Day". Printed greeting inside: "A hearty little greeting/That's especially meant to say/'Here's wishing Dad/the swellest kind/Of Happy Father's Day!'" Buddy was born Charles Hardin Holley in Lubbock, Texas in 1936. The youngest of four children Buddy grew up in a modest environment. His father, Lawrence Holley, worked various odd jobs and throughout the 1930's and 1940's was employed as a tailor and salesman in a local clothing store. His mother, Ella Drake Holley, was a full-time mother and housewife. Both encouraged their children's musical skills. Buddy's father became his manager. The "e" in Holly's name was dropped due to a spelling error on his first recording contract.
