The EMAD Design

The EMAD series bass drum head is named for the externally mounted adjustable damping system. This system allows each player to control the attack and focus of the drum head by choosing one of two removable foam damping rings. Choosing the thinner foam ring allows for punch and focus without sacrificing resonance, while choosing the wider foam ring maximizes the low end and attack of any bass drum. The EMAD system is available in a variety of options including single and two ply, and clear and coated versions to accommodate each drummer’s preferences.

EMAD Options

The EMAD line is comprised of a variety of options with varying thicknesses, plies, and coatings. The original EMAD is comprised of a single 10 mil ply and is available in clear, coated, and the Evans Onyx choices. The EMAD2 is made up of a 6.5 mil ply and a 10 mil ply for added durability and is available in a clear option. The GMAD series takes the single ply construction of the EMAD and adds extra strength by using a 12 mil ply. The Evans EMAD Heavyweight rounds out the line with 2 clear high-performance 10 mil plies. 1) He likes it!! - Since I am an old lady, I can't properly review this drumhead. I bought it for my daughter's boyfriend who plays in a very heavy metal band. However, I am pleased to announce that he is very happy with it. He really likes the response to his double kick and the sound is definitely what he is looking for with his genre of music. We added a kickport to the bass and he's in heaven.

2) Finally, the kick sound I was looking for - I play on a church band, playing mostly Hillsong/Passion music.

I've been toying around with different heads and dampening methods for my kit, but the kick drum by far has been the most difficult to tinker with. With traditional heads, I tried several schemes with commercial dampening gear and also by taping things (a small towel, foam, even diapers) to the inside of my kick batter head -- which sort of did the trick, but the sound was still lacking. If I started pounding on the kick, it sounded too "rubbery" or "boing-y", which was a shame given the decent shells I have.

Putting a pillow inside and mic-ing the drum was an option I did not like--the pillow choked the sound too much and the kick did not sound lively. Sure you can add all the enhancement you want with a mic, but sitting behind the drums the kick seemed underpowered compared to the rest of the kit. The sound tech may like the pillow/mic option, but hey, it's gotta sound good to the guy playing the drums.

Then I tried the EMAD2 -- boy, I should have done it years ago. My kick now has the sound I've been trying to make. It's got a nicely defined, punchy "thud" to it with a short, controlled sustain while not losing the volume you'd expect from a 22-inch barrel. All this in a neat package that requires no additional dampening. It's an added bonus to be able to see the uncluttered insides of the kick drum.

The kit sounds much more balanced now, and it's a joy to hear the kick again and again. The bass player on the band used to complain that my kick sounded too mushy and was difficult to hear over the mix, but he noticed the improvements right away.

If you can, go give it a try at a local music store -- I'm pretty sure a decent store has a kit or two on display with this head on it (the choice of heads & tuning make a far greater difference in the overall sound than the material of the shells). You can compare it with other bass drums as well...

1) Excellent value with professional sound - This is a solid kit that will serve the beginning-to-intermediate drummer well. The hardware is solid and stable, and the tonal quality of each drum is excellent with minimal ringing. The two critical hardware features - hi-hat stand and bass pedal - are sufficient for beginning and intermediate drummers, but are a bit unresponsive for pros. To complete this kit I recommend getting good cymbals. Any of the following cymbal packs will give this kit all of the cymbal power most drummers will need at the same value point as the drum kit itself: Sabian B8 Performance Set With Bag (ASIN B0002L54TE), Paiste 302 Plus Standard Cymbal Set (ASIN B0002D0NU2), or the Zildjian ZBT Series Basic Set Up 4 Pack (ASIN B0002CZXXA).

The best kept secret, though, is how easy it is to upgrade this kit to a professional quality kit that even a seasoned drummer will appreciate. Just replace the heads, which are OK for less experienced drummers, but too thin and unresponsive for professionals, with the Remo Emperor Standard ProPack (ASIN B0002F514I) and Remo Weatherking bass head (ASIN B0002E57G6), carefully tune them, and you will have a kit that sounds and plays like a high-end Ludwig kit. I also recommend that any experienced drummer select the hi-hat stand and bass pedal of their choice to bring this kit to professional standards. I use the Pearl H70W hi hat stand and P70 bass drum pedal from my Pearl Rhythm Traveler kit (ASIN B0002FO4R8).

Once this kit has been upgraded as described above you will have a great five-piece drum kit that should meet your every need, and at an incredible price. While I prefer the smaller Pearl Rhythm Traveler, there are times when a full-size kit is best and this one allowed me to economically acquire a pro grade kit with minor modifications to the kit and minimum additional investment.

If you are a beginner this is an outstanding kit with which to learn. The Ludwig quality is apparent, and the sound is great. You will also find a lot of flexibility in setting up your drums to meet just about any need. I appreciate the tom tom brackets that allowed me to get my toms exactly where I wanted them and at the optimum angle - this is not always easy with some kits.

If you are a pro and are considering a higher-end kit, take the time to look at this one and consider the cost of upgrading the heads to whichever brand you prefer, as well as upgrading the hi-hat stand and bass pedal (or using your favorites from another kit). You could save a bundle.

2) Great Set - I am in 2 bands, a metal band and a punk band, and they both love my set. I have been playing drums 4 years before buying this set, rendering it a great kit for beginners, intermediates, and even the better drummers who cant afford much. My favorite part about the set is the ability to add to it. I have bought a 8x10 and a 10x10 add-on drum kit for the set and I bought an extra bass drum. For drummers who really want a big, expanded set for cheap prices, get this. The quality is THE best i have seen on a drumset of this price. My friend came over when I got it andthought that it was a maple set (for those who dont know, maple is the best quality wood you can get for drums)! If you're on a budget but want GREAT quality, BUY THIS DRUMSET.

1) Read the description first. Ask a drummer if you don't understand - Just to clear things up, the title doesn't say drum set. It says 8 piece Shell pack which means you get 8 pieces. The two bass drums, three rack Toms, and two floor toms. If it says shell pack you will not get symbols and hardware. Read the description. This is a great shell pack.
