The Official Vintage Guitar Price Guide 2014 (Official Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide)

The Official Vintage Guitar Price Guide 2014 offers the data experts use to track the values of guitars, basses, lap steels, mandolins, ukuleles, banjos, amps, and effects. And, new this year is practical, professional advice on maintaining your collection! With more 176,000 copies sold to date, The Guide has long been the industry-leading reference, trusted by guitar dealers, professional players, and collectors worldwide! The Guide includes historical data along with values derived from comprehensive research and hard-nosed, realistic market analysis. At over 600 pages with information on more than 2,000 brands, and illustrated with 1,300 photos, no other source offers more information.

SOME OF THE CUSTOMER REVIEWS ABOUT THIS BOOK [ SAMPLE ]

1) A good guide, not perfect. - This is kind of the "gold standard" for vintage guitar prices, but not perfect. I think it is still the best being published now though. Some models of guitars are not listed, but most are, unless they are very rare. The prices are well researched, but don't always jive with what vintage guitars are going for on Ebay. Since it is published once a year though, it is possible a vintage guitar will have a spike in price, sometimes because a famous player makes people scramble for a certain guitar. I'm sure after Jack White became popular, the price of his Airline went sky high. I don't think every price guide could be perfect though, since a near mint guitar with all the original paperwork could command a premium over the high listing.

2) The new Bible. - For years the Gruhn's guide to Vintage guitar has been a great resource to collectors and sellers alike, Then they went and changed it's format in the latest edition. I feel this book has passed that book by as the go to resource for collectors and sellers alike. Listings are in alphabetical order based on brands and a different section for each type of instrument. Electric guitars, basses, acoustics and so on. It covers various types of instruments including mandolins and banjos which i also play. It also has photos of various instruments which the Gruhn book doesn't. This can help in identifying an instrument you may have. I highly recommend it.

Understanding Chord Progressions for Guitar: Compact Music Guides Series

(Music Sales America). Learn some of the most frequently used progressions in folk, blues, pop, and jazz.

SOME OF THE CUSTOMER REVIEWS ABOUT THIS BOOK [ SAMPLE ]

1) Well written and organized. Information of practical use. - For a compact book, it contains more useful information than books three times as big. Most helpful in understanding how to alter and embellish basic ii-V-I and I-IV-V progressions and understanding how to analyze chord function within a progession. A must for anyone serious about the guitar.

By A Customer on January 13, 1998

2) Great introductory jazz book - This is a great little book to start jazzing. Very helpful for me. Due to the small size, the information is very straightforward and clear (notes, tabs, roman numerals and chord diagrams are all used!). It is understandable, however, that one reviewer below gave this book one star and another gave it five stars. This is because the book is ONLY an outline of jazz guitar that just begins to scratch the surface. It gives basic tools (chord extensions, substitutions, various progressions etc.) and a quick example by which to learn each concept. No musical guidance or application is given. If this is what you want, this is the book for you. Overall, it's great for learning what can be done but gives no advancing information beyond that. This book is a staring point for jazz guitar that is best if supplemented by an instruction book that explains and tells how to use the tools from this book.
If this is your first jazz book, it is a seven bucks very well spent.

Chord and key relationships are inseparable, and learning these relationships is a must in becoming a successful musician." Alan Remington, Orange Coast College Music Dept.

SOME OF THE CUSTOMER REVIEWS ABOUT THIS BOOK [ SAMPLE ]

1) Simply genius - This is an incredibly easy intro to music theory. It shows which chords sound good with other chords. It shows how simply folk and rock songs are put together (3 or 4 chords, usually). I'm an "adult beginner" on piano and keep it on the piano at all times. It helps me figure out how to accompany myself once I've picked out a tune. I may even be on the verge of composing a song, thanks to this simple tool. Changing keys seemed impossibly difficult until I got this. (If you've ever wondered what is meant by the I, IV, V chords, get this and life will make sense.) Most of all, it's fun. Highly recommended.

By Learner on July 13, 2006

2) A wonderful music theory tool - I have played guitar for over 10 years. I am a guitar instructor as well. Sometimes it's difficult to keep all the chord theory in my head at all times. This little tool, the Chord Wheel, is an excellent aid that I find myself using often.

The Chord Wheel has a spinnable template that lays over the circle of fifths. Instantly, it helps you understand the flats and sharps in each key. Once you spin it to a certain key, it gives you all the main chord substitutions for every step in the gey--genious. The Chord Wheel also has some excellent chord theory instruction within its few pages.

I use The Chord Wheel as part of my teaching curriculum. I haven't found a better tool to teach the circle of fifths or to introduce my students to the power of basic chord substitutions.

Excellent product, Jim. Thanks.

Hope this helps.

Father of the Blues: An Autobiography (The Roots of jazz)

W. C. Handy's blues—“Memphis Blues," "Beale Street Blues," "St. Louis Blues"—changed America's music forever. In Father of the Blues, Handy presents his own story: a vivid picture of American life now vanished. W. C. Handy (1873–1958) was a sensitive child who loved nature and music; but not until he had won a reputation did his father, a preacher of stern Calvinist faith, forgive him for following the "devilish" calling of black music and theater. Here Handy tells of this and other struggles: the lot of a black musician with entertainment groups in the turn-of-the-century South; his days in minstrel shows, and then in his own band; how he made his first $100 from "Memphis Blues"; how his orchestra came to grief with the First World War; his successful career in New York as publisher and song writer; his association with the literati of the Harlem Renaissance.Handy's remarkable tale—pervaded with his unique personality and humor—reveals not only the career of the man who brought the blues to the world's attention, but the whole scope of American music, from the days of the old popular songs of the South, through ragtime to the great era of jazz.

SOME OF THE CUSTOMER REVIEWS ABOUT THIS BOOK [ SAMPLE ]

1) Great history of the South and the birth of the blues - W.C. Handy is well known in Memphis, TN because of the blues, but his story begins in Florence, Alabama. I teach 8th graders a unit comparing and contrasting his life with his neighbor from Tuscumbia, Helen Keller. Handy's life was rich with music, travel, hard times, discrimination, and fame. The picture he paints of minstrel days and struggling to live on the road sticks in your mind. His words provide a rich setting for the birth of music that my students listen to today. The book is too long to require them to read, but I read them sections to give them a flavor of the South they do not comprehend. I highly recommend this book to lovers of jazz, Southern history and stories about people who overcome great adversity and succeed.

By A Customer on April 7, 2000

2) A window into the beginning of jazz and blues - This is a look at how jazz and blues began, from the man who was instrumental in getting it started. W.C. Handy tells us how the transition was made from marches, classical music, dance music, Stephen Foster, vaudville tunes and folk blues to the arranged and orchestrated blues and jazz of the 20th Century. Not only did Handy help create the music, but he also helped preserve it through recordings and publications. In this book, he tells in detail how he came to compose his most famous pieces, including Memphis Blues, St. Louis Blues and Beale Street Blues. Handy is a superb storyteller who paints a vivid picture of life in the Reconstruction South, and the world of the African-American entertainer during the minstrel show days and the birth of the jazz era.

Tales of Hoffmann Vocal Score (Dover Vocal Scores)

The composer's only grand opera, which took years to write, was closest to his heart. Not quite finished when he died in 1880, it was orchestrated and provided with recitatives by Ernest Guiraud, who also added the famous barcarolle from an earlier opera-ballet by Offenbach. This volume, an unabridged reprint of the rare, comprehensive fifth edition, contains the full vocal score and all recitatives.

SOME OF THE CUSTOMER REVIEWS ABOUT THIS BOOK [ SAMPLE ]

1) Tales of Hoffmann Vocal Score - An unusual score in which the Antonia act comes before the Giulietta act, but overall very clear print. Note that the text is only in French, and I noted a few text errors here and there. I'd recommend it over the Schirmer score, which is harder to read as the fonts are smaller.
