This is one of the super rarities in the St. Gaudens series. This date also has one of the lowest pops in the St. Gaudens' run. PCGS has graded only 20 coins in MS62 and a mere 16 in all higher conditions. This coin has a golden orange color with nice luster and strike. Its surfaces have the normal number of marks expected for a coin of this grade. It has excellent eye appeal and is a problem free coin that should fit nicely into someone's collection. You do not see many of these offered for sale these days,so look at this one closely. The 1921 Saint Gaudens is a leading rarity among 20th century U.S. gold. While other issues most notably the 1927-D exists in overall fewer numbers, the 1920-S and the 1921 are encountered far less frequently in mint state condition. In the 1988 book,"A Handful of 20th-Century United States Gold Coins,1907-1933," David W. Akers even goes so fa as to opine,"More than half of the total population of extant 1921 Double Eagles is in circulated condition, and the majority of the mint state pieces grade only MS60."
