Symphony No. 8

Born in Paris in 1952, Philippe Chamouard has always tried to
separate himself from all influences and schools. This is why, in 1987, he decided to destroy all of his earlier compositions! This new recording features the composer's Eighth Symphony, a panoramic work with infinite landscapes. In the third movement a bagpipe rings out to the tune of Amazing Grace, played beautifully by soloist François Marchal. Similarly, the Poème du Vent(Poem of the Wind invites a naturalistic meditation. These works are
presented by the Rouen Conservatory Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by the eminent Claude Brendel.

Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone

Yo-Yo Ma's first collaboration with acclaimed Italian film composer, Ennio Morricone. Features original cello & orchestra arrangements by Morricone of his most popular themes: "The Mission," "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," "Cinema Paradiso" and others.

Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The MissionThe Good, the Bad and the UglyOnce Upon a Time in AmericaCinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine.

Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition

Cameron Carpenter, who is probably the most brilliant (and therefore most controversial) young organist on the concert circuit, has chosen a blockbuster program. First is his arrangement of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." Carpenter reveals astonishing new insights into the original piano score and Marshall Yaeger's Kaleidoplex fractal art lends an exciting visual element to the DVD. The second half is "New York City Sessions" by Cameron Carpenter. A result of evenings improvising on the inspiring Trinity organ, one theme of Carpenter's suite is C-B-G-B, the name of one of New York's most famous rock music clubs. At times sounding like a theatre organ, a cathedral instrument, a techno nightclub, or the New York City subway system, Carpenter explores the organ's resources in extraordinary depth and detail. For anyone that wants to know what a 21st Century organ of 240-voices sounds like when exercised to its full capacity, this album is a must! In addition, the DVD includes a documentary on the making of the album. Carpenter plays the Trinity organ, visits Manhattan locales, and is interviewed. The DVD also includes a recording of a Virgil Fox "performance" on the Trinity Organ. Fox, whom The New York Times called "the ultimate switched-on master of the instrument," recorded Bach's Trio Sonata No. 6 in G Major on his beloved Aeolian-Skinner organ at the Riverside Church in 1963. Douglas Marshall accurately transferred all of Fox's interpretation and expression to the Trinity Organ. Marshall Yaeger added charming and amusing Kaleidoplex fractal art. Experiencing the results in 5.1 Surround Sound will provide a transcendental experience to the listener.

Ronald Reagan voluminous 50-year correspondence with a movie fan and later political supporter.

A 50-year correspondence with a movie fan and later political supporter. Over 135 letters, mostly ALS's, signed variously "Ron", "Ronald" or "Dutch". Also included are letters of Nancy Reagan and the President's mother, Nelle, as well as hundreds of signed and unsigned photographs, and a large volume of related material. The collection offered here is for all intents and purposes uncatalogued and represents a significant opportunity for an interested party to parlay this massive archive into a substantial institutional grouping, and/or a major non-fiction work of one of the 20th Century's most popular presidents. The correspondence is to Zelda Multz, who is the international fan club president, and is very similar to a collection that was recently offered by Steven S. Raab, being a correspondence of a similar fan club official, Lorraine Wagner. The Wagner correspondence featured approximately twice as many letters, yet did not have the bulk of related material as does the Multz collection. Most prized, from a historical and visual standpoint, is the incomparable photographic archive that is presented with this group. Many of the photos are personal small snapshots of Reagan in his youth with family and friends. Steven Raab's collection was offered at $395,000, and has been reported to have been sold at a figure not too far from the offered price. It should be noted that this collection as with the collection of Lorraine Wagner, may have letters that are secretarial or autopen, which have not been identified, as the cohesive historical picture is what is being presented here. A quick scan of the best letters including one that references Hitler and Communists, leaves ...May be edited due to formatting. More information is always available.
