Luigi Nono: Variazioni Canoniche, for Chamber Orchestra / A Carlo Scarpa, Architetto, for Orchestra / No Hay Caminos, Hay que Caminar..., for Seven Instrumental Groups

One of the paradoxes of the music of Nono, the Venetian avant-garde composer, is that form and expression seem inversely proportional: the more abstract the music's architecture becomes, the more highly suggestive it sounds. Indeed, it is Nono's commitment to humanism--often expressed as a kind of personal vulnerability--as well as his warmth and innate lyricism that sets him apart from European colleagues such as Boulez and Berio. Michael Gielen conducts one of the finest performances of Nono's orchestral music, particularly the haunting No hay caminos, hay que caminar, dedicated to Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovski. --Joshua Cody
