To the left of it is another piece from the book, another face, which reminded me of Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones. He looks rather like that. It was something about the mouth and the nose that reminded me. So I imagined that was another tribe: the Celtic man was one tribe, and this was another tribe. And these were the connections between all the ancient civilizations, but as the painting started to develop, the one on the right started to look quite modern, so I think of him as a more modern face, with these ancient connections in the background there. The rod almost goes through his mouth, like a cigar or something; it comes out of his mouth. So that is quite nice, pretty. A little bit of pencil there, rather than charcoal, and then this shape here I painted as a cymbal, a drum cymbal. Like a joke. With all this talk of symbolism, symbols, symbolic, finally I had to put a cymbal in there. For one of these ancients to play. A couple of symbolic trees in the background. I is really an idea of the tribes being connected by something, the thread or the rod that connects us all. So he is us now, this is us in ancient times, this is the middle times or before; they are all different peoples, all joined with a similar idea." ~Sir Paul McCartney.
